My Final Post: Reflections on my Peace Corps Service

image

It has been six months since I have completed my service in the Peace Corps and returned to America, and in full disclosure this is the fourth attempt I have made at writing a final blog post to sum up my experiences, convey what I have learned, and generally distill 26 months of service into one final post.

I will tell you right now that it is impossible. There is no way for me to accurately convey all of the life changing experiences, from the mundane to the earth-shifting, that I have experienced. Nor will there ever be a way to tell how much of an impact I have might have had on the people of my communities in Namibia.

The beauty of Namibian Nights. Amazing.

“I feel that my father’s greatest legacy was the people he inspired to get involved in public service and their communities, to join the Peace Corps, to go into space. And really that generation transformed this country in civil rights, social justice, the economy and everything.”

The musical stylings of the Namibian rap duo Black Powder, composed of J-Cool (the shorter one, real name George) and Hostile (the taller one, real name Noah). This was taken outside of my house a couple weeks ago. In all honesty these are two of my best and most helpful students.

An Introduction to Tsintsabis

It has been about 6 weeks since I have arrived at my new site, and since I have arrived I have hit the ground running, or just hitting the ground in general. Either way, I have been busy going to funerals, getting the library in order, helping set up the school computer lab, going to funerals, teaching, settling in, going to the hospital, getting aquatinted with the ambulance network, getting to know the nurses at the local clinic, and of course, going to more funerals.

The Real Peace Corps

This posting is from another PCV’s blog who is currently serving in Ethiopia. His name is Michael, and though I have never met him, he has perfectly captured what being a volunteer in Africa is like. I feel like he was written the exact words I have thought. Please go and check out the blog Waid’s World, not to mention the original post so you can share some love with him!

The Real Peace Corps
By Michael, PCV Ethiopia

I feel as though I’ve done somewhat of a disservice throughout this blog. I’ve painted a picture of my time here that isn’t precisely accurate. I’m an emotional person, a romantic.  Optimistic to a fault. I like extremes and superlatives. I exaggerate in an attempt to draw the reader in, and to make sense of things I can’t make sense of.

A time-lapse video of the sun setting over the Kavango River with Angola on the right and Namibia on the left. This is my first attempt at this, so hopefully I will be able to do this for a more spectacular sunset in the future.

Hello There. Whether you meant to get here or not you have somehow managed to find my blog. This isn’t any old blog, you know. This is my attempt to document my time spent serving with the Peace Corps as an education volunteer in Namibia. There will be good stories, photos, and perhaps a short movie or two.
